Fuji Z700exr Review

First I would like to say thanks to Fuji for lending me the Fuji Z700exr to review.
I know there have already been a couple of reviews by David and Ray so I won't be going into great detail of the camera as they have already covered it.

My Thoughts
The camera is very well built with a solid feel. The camera is made of glossy plastic but it isn't hard to hold thanks to the groove on the front. The groove also makes the sliding on/off switch easy to use.
The screen is the main feature of the camera in my opinion. It is massive and very detailed. I did think that as the screen in so big there would be no where to grip the camera but this isn't the case. I was able to hold the camera very stable but that may be because I have small hands. I found the screen very easy to navigate and it was responsive. All the icons were very large and clearly labelled. The screen is especially nice when reviewing your photos.
The image quality is very good with decent detail and colour accuracy. The EXR sensor worked a treat delivering far better images than basic auto mode. Some of the images were a little over sharpened but they were still perfectly acceptable. Another problem I found was that it over saturated bright colours so much that all the detail was lost.
Here's an example of the over-saturation

The speed of the camera is the only disappointment I had with the camera. It took around 5 seconds to start up and a further 2 seconds to take the first image. There is also a 4 - 5 second delay in between photos. Also the menus sometimes took a second or two to appear after pressing the screen.
The 5x zoom was a decent length however I missed the wide angle lens. The macro is very good and as the lens doesn't extend you can get even closer.
I also liked some of the unique features like cat and dog detection, face recognition which is like face detection but the persons name appears also (just in case you forget their name) and the touch&shoot option which allows you to touch were you want the focus.
The movie quality is very good. The colours are good and it is smooth if there aren't too many moving objects. Sound quality is ok although as expected with such a small mono microphone it isn't very clear. Also the zoom cannot be used whilst recording.
Here are some images taken with the camera;
Macro detail is excellent for a compact.

Colour rendition is almost spot on. It's sometimes a bit warm.

For anyone looking for a simple point and shoot camera which looks great and has some cool features this should be on your list. It takes great photos and feels great in the hands. As the camera is aimed more at P&S users I don't think they'll mind the speed issue. Also at its current price I think its a bargain for its features.
Sorry that there isn't much detail with text and photos.
Thanks for reading.

Super stuff Jack (which is all we expect from you from now on)
Not the sort of camera I would go for but an excellent report on this new bit of kit. The wasp shot, I found was exceptional for this camera.
Thanks for putting it together and posting Jack, mind you, I suppose you thought you had to as they lent it to you!! hehe.
Great stuff and congratulations again on the A level attainments.
Cheers

It might be a point and shoot camera Jack but in your hands you have produced some brilliant shots. Well done.
Dave.

Hi Jack
I have put a link to this photoblog on twitter so that all at Fuji HQ can see it. I don't think it is getting the attention it deserves. I think the monoblogs are the cause of it being buried too soon.
I suggest you put a link in the UK chat section to advertise it.
Cheers M8

Hi Jack
Thanks for the review, after looking at all 3 reviews on this camera it could be what I'm looking for as a second camera to slip in my pocket for those spare of the moment shots. My S5800 is a little to big to pop in my pocket and take to work everyday, so I miss out on taking photos for the daily challenge and recording nights out with the girls.
thank you
regards
Anne
ps I dont like wasps but the photo of a wasp is superb.

Thanks Anne.
It's would be a great little camera to slip in the pocket. Maybe also look at the JX300 which has a longer zoom but is just as small. I have written a review for that also.

Good job well done Jack.
I'd like to see your thoughts on the F200EXR which I use as my 'pocket' camera as opposed to the S9500 which I normally use.

Jim

Thanks for compiling the review Jack ~ Interesting. I think you'd conjure up brilliant images regardless of make, model, size. You'd make the ugliest bug look pretty and a molehill look like an impressive mountain for your photography is outstanding whatever camera you click the shutter on. I use my Fuji HS10 as my main camera but the 70EXR fits in my handbag better especially for those quick opportunity shots but the one you've reviewed looks good too. Mr Finepix is pleased too~well done Jack
