Hardwick Park

I took my new HS10 out with me today when we visited Hardwick Park on the grounds of Hardwick Hall in County Durham. I recommend a visit here as it is a beautiful location, especially on a crisp Autumn day like today. Best of all it is free!

I was really pleased with some of the shots I produced today so thought I'd attempt my first photoblog on here!

I chose this shot to start my blog as I love the colours, light and reflections. This shot just says Autumn to me and really reflects what a lovely day it was. The water was perfectly still and helps lead into the scene, adding depth in the process.

This is the view across the lake towards Hardwick Hall. A walk around the lake itself must be at least 2 miles. The park land also has a purpose built wooden cafe and toilets in the style of log cabins which compliment the beatiful surroundings perfectly.

The lake itself has lots of wildlife including plenty of Swans, Ducks and Seagulls. Really pleased with several of my Swan pics today, but chose this one as it fills most of the frame, has decent detail and I like the water effects created by the Swan's movement.

I didn't manage to frame this Duck as I would have liked, but I liked the detail captured in the feathers and the water droplets on the Duck's face. He didn't like to pose for a photo, and kept searching underwater for food....but then I guess that is why they're called Ducks!

Hardwick Park has several pathways and routes to explore away from the main lakeside walk. I thought this bridge in particular looked very quaint and I liked the mix of light and shadow in the foreground and background.

This one just looks so crisp. Lovely sunny Autumn day with a bright Blue sky, Autumnal colours in the distant trees contrasting with bare branches silhouetting in the foreground. The strong figure of the tower also adds to the scene.

Whilst crossing another bridge I thought I'd have a go at framing the scene using the bridges' design as a window. Think it turned out pretty well overall.

Just as we were heading back to the car park I spotted Mr Squirrel in the foliage. It was pretty shaded woodland and didn't have much time to play with settings, so as a beginner this came out dark. Still, can make out the detail in the little chap (once he stayed still enough to capture!)

*edit* Just remembered, this was also at full 30x zoom and handheld

Hope you enjoyed the read and looking at my pics!

Just beginning to learn about photography as a hobby, as never used more than a digital compact before so it's a steep learning curve with new settings and theories to learn. I'm finding myself concentrating on composition more than I ever did, and I think that has definitely seen me improve my photographs already.

Thanks

Baz

Hello Barry.

Well done to you M8 on this your first photoblog.  Stunning shots with that HS10.  I guess you are thinking that it's an upgrade from your FinePix S1800.  There is no doubt about it, you have a great bit of kit there and as you say, if you feel you are getting better and better, good for you.  I guess a first photoblog is a sign of your increasing confidence.

Thanks for putting this one together, it's very nice work, I like the variety of shots and some of the angles you have gone for, show to me (in my view) you have an eye for the shot.

Cheers

Thanks guys, encouraging words!

I'd just remembered that the Squirrel shot was also at full 30x zoom and heldheld, so surprised I got a fairly clear shot of him under the time constraints I faced (a small child having a strop in his pushchair!).

Thanks for the comments everyone! I'm sure I'll do more blogs in the future. The next learning process is going to be Bonfire Night on Saturday.

Hi Christine Smile Fancy seeing you on here Wink

I posted the camera today from work, so it may get there tomorrow as the post tends to be really quick when I send from there, if not, should definitely be Wednesday....hope Sian enjoys playing with the camera! P.S. I sent it recorded delivery so it will probably need signing for.

Brilliant blog and that first autumn image is certainly a cracking shot. The duck one is fine too, you have space in front of the subject, which is always a good thing.

This is certainly a beautiful place so thank you so much for sharing.  Looking forward to more.
