185 Squadron Memorial Sculpture - Lissett, Yorkshire

This is a collection of pictures that I took last week when I was on holiday in Yorkshire.

I visited the Memorial Sculpture for the first time a year ago in the afternoon when there was strong light casting some wonderful shadows on the sculpture. I took several pictures which I then uploaded into my gallery here and on Ephotozine. This time I returned to take some more in evening light.

When Novera constructed the windfarm at Lissett, near Driffield in East Yorkshire, it was on the site previously used by RAF Lissett 185 Squadron. A memorial sculpture was commissioned by the company to commemorate those who flew from that airfield and who did not return.

The sculpture was designed and constructed by local artist Peter Naylor, who won a competition held by Novera and the 158 Squadron Association.

His vision for the memorial was for a group of seven figures representing a bomber crew, [the typical size of most WWII
bomber crews] with the seven rings in the 158 Squadron badge, and the seven figures supporting each other reinforcing the Squadron motto, “Strength in Unity”.

Peter Naylor is quoted as saying “I have a great inner personal desire that this memorial should be both a visually powerful piece of sculpture as well as a fitting tribute to the men and women who served in 158 Squadron .”

The names on the sculpture are of the 851 members of 158 squadron who died. On the floor you can see the rings from the  Squadron badge

The memorial is on a raised piece of land with a layby beside it, so once you have located it on the map it is easy to spot and access. This year there was the addition of an information board, showing photos from the opening ceremony and information about the memorial. There is also a visitors book.

The 158 Sqn crest Smile

Very apt as today is the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. marked today at 15:52 with a quote from Winston Churchill

"Never before in the field of human conflict, has so much been owed by so many, to so few"

As an ex 22 year RAF member very well done. I am impressed Smile

An interesting blog Helen, well presented, nice pictures of the sculptures, I liked the frames too, which gave that finishing touch to the pictures, it was also a nice gesture to commemorate Lisset in this form.

Thankyou for sharing this most interesting blog

Still on the RAF theme I have a Battle of Britain Blog which you may enjoy!
