Annual Ploughing Match

The annual Isle of Wight Ploughing Match  held last Sunday, (1st April)  has really escalated over the last few years  with all profits going to the local Earl Mountbatten Hospice

This year we had an unprecedented entry of 20 horse drawn teams in addition to the many tractors modern & vintage. A good number of the horse drawn teams travelled over from the mainland on a subsidised ticket provided by one of the ferries.

The event provided a really interesting day photographically as the weather was beautiful  if cold.

I`m sure you will all be heartily sick of heavy horses by the time you`ve waded through this, but I`ve edited out a lot of pics!

I`m starting off with some tractor shots to encourage the mechanical horsepower buffs!

Comfort break? ... :)

Putting the world to rights

Looks straight to me!

3 general views to show the proximity of the horse teams to the tractors

All the horse ploughs were made by Ransomes

Beautifully matched pair of Clydesdales

Shires team belonging to a brewery

Pair of cobs that also pull an omnibus in the New Forest

Percherons a French heavy horse breed

Unmatched shires rounding the headland

An endangered species! ... the Suffolk Punch is high on the endangered breeds list

Comtois horses , a breed from the French / swiss border. A slightly smaller draught breed similar to our cobs

The Suffolks working

Showing the Clydesdales cornering ... see the dressage steps!

The mixed shires at the headland ... notice how close they have to pass other teams

The Suffolks turning

The cobs turning ... see the alsatian assisting

Lunch time ... the Jack Russell left in charge!

Hope you enjoyed your visit... :)

One of those days where failure to carry a camera(and use it) should be an arrestable offence! LOL

Beautiful beautiful beautiful.

Which is the more polluting? Smelly tractors or smelly horses? Smile

Wonderful set of images Marion, all those teams, you certainly had a field day Marion ;-)    I also was impressed by the horsemanship (in my blog) of the tight corners to achieve getting back into the ploughing line of furrows, the reins being used to turn left were pulled to the right and round the right hand horses quarters, a bit like neck reining, I bet you enjoyed your day out, I'm certainly keen to have another bash at photographing the horse ploughing, especially after seeing your B/W shot of the grey Percherons. Thanks for sharing.

What a lovely record of an interesting event. Especially loved your photo over the caption "All the horse ploughs were made by Ransomes."  Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful photograpghs of the beautiful horses.  However, If I had to do the job for real I would use a tractor, no matter how romantic the image of the honest ploughman toiling in the field appears. Great blog - enjoyed your hedging one as well.

Another fabulous blog from rhe countryside Marion. You must have had a brilliant day, there was such a good turnout. It's lovely to see all the heavy breeds. I wouldn't have wanted the job of cleaning the harnesses though. Cleaned too many of those in the past.A big like from me.

Hi Marion

Excellent!!!

I must confess, I'm not a blog fan. but the standard of presentation and especially the quality of your photographs makes this blog most enjoyable.
